What is the Diploma Supplement?
The Diploma Supplement (DS) is a document attached to a higher education diploma with the aim of improving international transparency and facilitating the academic and professional recognition of qualifications (diplomas, degrees, certificates etc.). The DS is designed to provide information of the nature, level, context, content and status of the studies that were successfully completed by the individual named on the original diploma to which this supplement is appended. It does not involve any standards of judgements, equivalence and recognition statements. It is a flexible document which does not impose any rules, and aims to save time, money and effort. It is designed so that it can be adapted to local requirements.
The DS is issued by national institutions according to a common template developed as a result of the collaboration of the European Commission, Council of Europe, and UNESCO. This template, which was drafted and developed by a joint committee organized by the three institutions mentioned above, is issued in every official language of the European Union.

Since original credentials alone do not provide sufficient information, it is very difficult to gauge the level and function of a qualification without detailed explanations.
